Frosting a dial by hand, and why none can be repeated

A brass brush, a rotating wheel, and a tolerance measured in seconds of contact frosting a dial by hand leaves a texture that catches light differently on every piece.

It cannot be repeated exactly, which is the point. A machine-frosted dial is identical from piece to piece; a hand-frosted one is identifiably, provably singular.
